Metal Rescue take 2

Over on our face book page last week we did a product review of Metal Rescue using a pair of shock springs and hardware. We found on Chrome it worked quite well, even on the heavy pitted rust. Product makes the claim to be reusable, so we thought we would add that to our next test plus throw in some different platings to see how it handles that.

So we got all the fasteners, springs and small brackets required to bolt up the forks and engine on the cb400. There was a good mixture of chrome, zinc, zinc phosphate and cadmium plated items in various levels of rust.  This would be a good baseline on what to expect in the future when choosing to just drop items in the bath as opposed to soda blasting which is the way most are done now.
Everything in photo was just dropped into the bath with no regard to how it was arranged. Again it was placed in a warm area that maintained a 70 degree temp for 24 hours. At the end of this period everything was removed and dried,
Here are the results, items in the top half of the photo again came out amazing regardless of what type plating they originally had. There were a few items though in the bottom of the photo that were still pretty nasty and the plating didnt seem to be a factor. If you look at the photo you will see two springs with the same coating, one looks brand new while the other still had some crusty coating on it. Just in case it was  how they were placed in the bath, I threw them back in the bath fr another 12 hours. After 12 hours I removed the last pieces and still they looked the same with the exception f the brake stay bolt which had some improvement, the rest were untouched.

Final opinion on Metal Rescue is still its a good product, The initial cost of 19-25 bucks per gallon seems high but when you consider what you save its pretty cheap. The fasteners alone in the picture would cost $40 plus  to replace or it take a hour or so to soda blast. Depending on how long it last it could be a very cost effective addition to the shop. Next test will be a rusty fuel tank.
